Green Plums

A wooden basket spills over with plump green plums onto a dark, reflective tabletop, backed by a rumpled pale blue-grey cloth. Joseph Decker, an American painter known for his intensely detailed, almost obsessive still lifes, renders each fruit with a slightly different cast of green and gold, catching the light in small, careful highlights. The tumbling composition and warm wood tones give it real warmth and immediacy, prized among American still-life painters of the period.

The soft blue-greys and warm greens make this a versatile kitchen or dining room piece, and the intimate, close-up subject works especially well as part of a still-life grouping.
