A blue-and-white Chinese export bowl overflows with pomegranates, oranges, and lemons, their glossy citrus skins set off by fresh green leaves. A halved pomegranate spills its jewel-red seeds onto a draped grey cloth below, alongside a peeled lemon, a butterfly, and a beetle. Jacob van Hulsdonck, an Antwerp painter working in the early seventeenth century, was one of the great pioneers of Flemish fruit still life, prized for his crisp detail, cool porcelain blues, and the small living creatures he tucked into every composition. This is a museum-caliber example of the genre, painted with the precision and quiet abundance that made these still lifes so prized by wealthy collectors of the era.
The rich, earthy browns, warm citrus tones, and blue porcelain accent make this a striking choice for a dining room, kitchen, or formal living space, especially for anyone drawn to Dutch and Flemish Golden Age still lifes.
