Green hills fold across the South Downs in overlapping slopes, dark clumps of trees settling into the hollows and patches of plowed ochre field breaking up the grass. A soft blue-grey haze sits along the far ridgeline. Nevinson is best known for his angular, Futurist-influenced images of the First World War and of modern city life. This is a quieter side of his work, with broad, confident strokes and simplified, flattened shapes that give the English countryside a calm, orderly rhythm.
The layered greens and warm ochres suit a living room, study, or bedroom, and the gentle, open composition works well above a sofa, mantel, or console.
