A blue jug of anemones, a pink bowl, and a vermilion chair set against a black-and-gold Chinese lacquer screen alive with tiny leaping figures. Cadell, one of the four Scottish Colourists, painted this in his Edinburgh studio at the height of his powers, when he was distilling Matisse and Japanese design into flat, confident blocks of color. Every element is pared back to its boldest shape: the emerald tablecloth, the violet-and-yellow patterned cloth, the sharp red silhouette of the chair.
This is a statement piece. It brings saturated color and a touch of Art Deco glamour to a dining room, entryway, or living room, and it holds up beautifully at larger sizes where the screen's detail can be read.
Reproduced from the original oil on canvas. Available as an unframed print, framed print, floating canvas, or museum canvas in a range of frame finishes.
